Costs assume a standard 600–650mm deep run, including templating, cutting, polishing and fitting — not just the slab. For a bespoke kitchen in the £20,000–£70,000 range, expect to sit in the upper half of these bands. London and the South East typically run ten to twenty-five per cent above Midlands pricing for similar materials.

Quartz Worktops - The Default for a Reason

Consistent colour from slab to slab. A smooth, almost-warm finish under the hand — warmer than granite, cooler than wood. The way light sits on a polished quartz surface without the unpredictable movement of natural stone. Engineered from ninety per cent or more ground quartz bound with resin, quartz worktops deliver what most homeowners want above everything else: predictability. You can specify from a sample in the showroom and know that the finished worktop will look the same.

What quartz is good at

What to know before you specify
Heat is the vulnerability
The resin binder in quartz can scorch under direct heat — a hot pan straight from the hob will leave a pale, cloudy ring that no cleaner will fix. Homeowners who have lived with quartz for years describe keeping a permanent trivet beside the hob as a non-negotiable habit. If you are the kind of cook who grabs a pan and puts it down wherever is nearest, this is worth knowing.
Strong pigments need prompt wiping
Turmeric, hair dye and neat bleach can discolour the resin if left for hours, particularly on light-coloured matte finishes. Most food stains wipe off with a stone cleaner and a non-scratch pad, but faint shadows can remain visible in raking light. A patterned or mid-tone colour is more forgiving than a clinical white.
Edges chip more than you would expect
After several years, small chips around dishwashers, sinks and island corners are common — felt more than seen, but enough to be an irritation. Softer edge profiles reduce this. It is worth specifying them on high-traffic runs.
Not fully UV-stable
Not recommended for outdoor kitchens or runs that sit in direct sunlight for long periods.
The honest trade-off
You are choosing predictability over the natural variation of stone. Some quartz owners describe the surface as looking "a bit flat" after a few years compared to the depth of granite. Others see that uniformity as a strength. Be honest with yourself about which camp you are in.
Granite Worktops - Natural Stone with Real Character

Every slab is different. Veining, mineral deposits, crystalline structures that catch the light and shift as you move around the kitchen. Cool to the touch even on a warm day — a glassy, almost liquid feel under the hand that engineered surfaces do not quite replicate. Granite gives a kitchen a sense of permanence and weight that is hard to achieve any other way.

What granite is good at

Superb heat resistance. Granite is the one worktop material where most owners genuinely put hot pans straight down without a trivet. Forum after forum describes the same pattern: cast-iron pans, trays from the oven, hot dishes from the hob - all landing directly on the granite for a decade with no damage.

Every slab is unique. The depth, the movement, the way light plays through crystalline structures - granite has a visual life that engineered surfaces cannot match.

Remarkable longevity. Owners with eight to ten years of heavy family use describe surfaces that look "essentially unchanged". Granite outlasts the cabinets it sits on.

What to know before you specify
Granite is porous but the reality is less dramatic than the marketing.
Dense, dark granites (black, blue pearl, star galaxy) are highly resistant to staining in normal use, and many owners admit to resealing far less often than guidance suggests - sometimes not for years - without seeing any change.
Lighter, more textured granites are more porous: oils and fats left for extended periods can absorb as a diffuse dark patch that never fully disappears. The practical answer is to know your specific stone's porosity and seal accordingly — roughly annually for lighter stones, less often for dense darks.
Pattern varies slab to slab.
This is granite's strength and its risk. Always view the actual slab before committing. A sample card shows you the species; the slab shows you the individual. Vein matching and seam placement are decisions that should be made in front of the stone.
Some patterns date.
The most common granite regret is not about performance - it is about choosing a very busy, sparkly pattern that felt fashionable at the time and less so five years later. Quieter, denser stones tend to age better.
Sintered Stone - The Premium Choice
Thinner than quartz or granite. Harder. More ceramic to the touch - cooler, with a density you feel immediately. Neolith and Dekton come in profiles as slim as six millimetres, which opens up design possibilities that traditional stone cannot achieve: waterfall edges, integrated splashbacks, flush-mounted hobs, even cabinet door faces. Where quartz and granite feel like natural materials refined, sintered stone feels like something engineered from scratch - because it is.
Glenfield specifies Neolith for clients who want the most durable surface available and a contemporary aesthetic. Neolith's satin finish in particular has a quality under the hand that feels distinctly more pleasant than some other sintered brands - something you notice immediately when you touch a sample in the showroom.
What sintered stone is good at

Effectively impervious. Heat, scratch, stain and UV resistant. Homeowners with four years of daily use describe surfaces that look "like new - no chips, stains or scratches". You can put a hot pan down directly without thinking about it.

What to know before you specify
Edges are the vulnerability
Sintered stone is extraordinarily strong on the surface, but the edges — particularly around undermount sinks, hob cut-outs and exposed corners — can chip if knocked with something heavy. This is the most consistently cited downside in both homeowner and fabricator reviews. Adequate support underneath thin profiles and careful detailing of cut-outs is essential. This is a material that rewards a skilled fabricator and punishes a careless one.
Texture matters more than you think.
Some textured finishes trap food and dirt in a way that the smooth marketing photographs do not prepare you for. Always ask to clean a textured sample before you commit to a finish — not just to look at it.
Printed surface, not through-body veining.
Most marble-look Dekton and Neolith patterns are printed onto the surface. This means the edges will not show the same veining unless you specify mitred drop-down edges and plan the vein matching carefully. Some homeowners find the marble-look patterns "a bit too fake" in person compared with samples. View a full slab before committing to a bold vein design.
Premium price.
Sintered stone typically costs more than equivalent quartz and sits at the top of the granite range. For a premium kitchen, the extra is often justified by the performance — but only if the fabrication quality matches. Most problems with sintered stone come from poor handling and installation, not the material itself.
Specialist fabricators are non-negotiable.
Sintered stone requires different blades, handling techniques and support systems to quartz and granite. Ask who fabricates the worktops and whether they specialise in ultra-compact surfaces.

Solid Wood Worktops - Warmth You Can Feel
Oak, walnut, iroko. The warmth of timber under the hand - a slight give compared with stone, a tactile softness that changes the way a kitchen feels the moment you lean on it. Wood is the opposite of stone's permanence: it patinas, marks, develops a story. For Shaker and farmhouse kitchens, timber can carry a kitchen's character in a way no other material can. Forty-year-old oak worktops exist in working family kitchens right now, still going, distinctly "lived in" - and their owners are replacing them with more wood, not switching to stone.
What solid wood is good at

Sensory warmth. No other worktop material feels like wood under the hand. In a kitchen full of hard surfaces - stone, ceramic, glass, steel - wood brings balance.

Kindness to everything that lands on it. Less likely to chip a glass placed down hard. Forgiving of daily contact in a way that stone is not.

Refinishable. This is wood's unique advantage. A scratched, marked, even water-damaged worktop can be sanded back and re-oiled to look almost new. One homeowner described bringing fifteen-year-old tops back to life with an afternoon's work. No stone surface offers this.

Generally lower cost than stone. Good-quality oak or iroko, supplied and fitted, typically comes in at £250–£450 per linear metre - less than half the cost of sintered stone at the same depth.

What to know before you specify
Oiling is real, but less onerous than the guidance suggests. Manufacturers recommend intensive oiling in the first few months, then quarterly. In practice, most homeowners settle into oiling once or twice a year - when the surface looks dry - and describe it as a quick, fifteen-minute job rather than a project. The real discipline is not the oiling; it is wiping spills quickly and never letting water sit.
The sink zone is where things go wrong.
Water ingress around sinks - particularly Belfast sinks - is the most common cause of serious damage to wood worktops. Standing water leads to blackening and mould that requires aggressive sanding and sometimes bleaching to remove. If you choose wood, be realistic about how you use the sink area. Some of the happiest wood-worktop owners deliberately pair timber with a stone or quartz section around the sink and hob, keeping the warmth of wood where it matters without exposing it to the worst abuse.
Anti-bacterial wipes will destroy the finish.
This catches people out. Standard kitchen surface sprays and anti-bac wipes strip the oil finish and can require a full sand-back and re-oil. Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. Keep the wipes for the stone sections.
Be honest about the patina question.
People who enjoy a "lived-in" surface and are comfortable with the occasional mark love wood and would choose it again without hesitation - some on their second or third kitchen with timber tops. People who want a pristine showroom finish find the ongoing character stressful and would not choose wood again. This is not a quality question; it is a temperament question.

How to Choose:
A Practical Decision Framework
Not "it depends". Actual recommendations based on how you use your kitchen:
If you want low maintenance and predictable colour** → quartz.
Specify a mid-tone, patterned design for maximum forgiveness, and keep a trivet by the hob. Königstone offers a wide range of finishes.
If you want one-of-a-kind natural character and you do not mind occasional resealing → granite.
Choose a dense, darker stone for the least maintenance. Always view the actual slab.


If budget allows and you want maximum durability** → sintered stone.
Specify Neolith in a satin or smooth finish, and make sure the fabricator specialises in ultra-compact surfaces.
If your kitchen is Shaker or farmhouse and you want warmth** → solid wood, with stone on the busiest run if your habits demand it.

Worktops in a Bespoke Kitchen - How Glenfield Specifies

At the design stage.

At the slab viewing

After carcasses are installed.
Worktops are templated in situ, once the cabinets are in place. This means the fit is exact - cut to your kitchen as it actually is, not as the drawings predicted. Templating typically happens in the second week of a two-to-three-week installation.
All worktop fabrication and fitting is coordinated by the same in-house team that fits the kitchen — Paul, Brad, Steve and Lewis. There is no scheduling gap between trades, no third-party fabricator working to a different diary. The worktop goes in as part of the project, not as an afterthought.
